What are impressions on Twitter? How are they measured?

Last Updated: Aug 12, 2011 01:10PM PDT

Impressions are an important part of the analytics we provide for your Twitter account. The number of impressions represents an estimate of the total possible number of times someone could have viewed your tweet. How do we calculate this? We take the follower count of a user and add the followers of any retweeters to generate the total number of impressions. For example, if Ricky Yean, David Tran, and Mark Linsey have 1963, 2053, 582 followers, respectively, and they retweeted Crowdbooster’s (4523 followers) latest quip then this single tweet would have generated 9121 impressions. We do not remove overlap, and just like many other forms of media (TV, paid display advertising, Facebook flyers), it is difficult to say whether or not people actually saw the tweets. However, this number is crucial in evaluating the relative performance of your tweets in engaging followers.
